چکیده

In studies on affective priming of pronunciation responses, participants are asked to read target words that are preceded by prime words with the same (e.g., CANCER–UGLY) or a different (e.g., BIRTHDAY–UGLY) valence. Previous studies revealed a mixed pattern of results. We report the results of an experiment in which we observed shorter reaction times on trials where the prime and target had the same valence compared to trials where the valence of the two stimuli differed. However, this effect occurred only when target words were degraded (e.g., %U%G%L%Y%). The results suggest that affective priming of pronunciation responses is a genuine phenomenon that appears to be more robust when targets are degraded. © 2001 Academic Press

On the replicability of the affective priming effect in the pronunciation task.

Bargh, Chaiken, Raymond, and Hymes (1996) and Hermans, De Houwer, and Eelen (1994) showed that a valenced target word is pronounced faster after the presentation of an affectively related prime word than after the presentation of an affectively unrelated prime word. This finding is important because it provides crucial evidence for the hypotheses that stimulus evaluation (a) is goal-independent...

A Double Dissociation between Conscious and Non-conscious Priming of Responses and Affect: Evidence for a Contribution of Misattributions to the Priming of Affect

Studies have demonstrated conscious and non-conscious priming of responses and of affect. Concerning response priming, presenting a target-related (congruent) distractor prior to a target typically facilitates target responses. This facilitation - the response-priming effect - is observed in comparison to a less related (incongruent) distractor. An incongruent distractor would interfere with th...

Affective priming with subliminally presented pictures.

Affective priming studies have demonstrated that subliminally presented prime words can exert an influence on responses towards positive or negative target stimuli. In the present series of experiments, it was investigated whether these findings can be extended to pictorial stimuli. Ideographically selected positive, neutral, and negative picture primes that were sandwich-masked immediately pre...

The Quarterly Journal of Experimental Psychology

Recent motivational affective priming studies (Moors & De Houwer, 2001; Moors, De Houwer, & Eelen, 2004) showed that primes that indicate success on a goal-inducing task facilitate positive target responses whereas primes that indicate failure on that task facilitate negative target responses. In the current studies, we examined whether these priming effects depend on consciously intentional pr...

On the (un)conditionality 1 Running head: VALENCE PROPORTION EFFECT On the (un)conditionality of automatic attitude activation: The valence proportion effect

Affective priming studies have shown that participants are faster to pronounce affectively polarized target words that are preceded by affectively congruent prime words than affectively polarized target words that are preceded by affectively incongruent prime words. We examined whether affective priming of naming responses depends on the valence proportion (i.e. the proportion of stimuli that a...
